I drew this up about a year ago while sitting in my basement stressing about the end of my year in animation. I look at it now sort of like a tech demo of my comic abilities at the time. I'm nowhere near happy with it, and the piece itself was never actually finished, but I like that it looks like it's GETTING somewhere. My goal with photoshop is to basically get good enough at it to actually make my comic 99% on the computer. The first step for that is to try my hand at remaking this chunk of story. What I especially like about this piece is that it has been a year, and this scene still makes sense to leave in the story. That means I still like the idea I came up with a year ago, and haven't scrapped the whole thing because it wound up being stupid. Expect to see some work on this, but not crazy soon. Explanation below:

I did about 20 1 minute doodles yesterday, I chose this one. Not having had much time to spend in CS5, this is the only way I know to bulk up in general skill. Every time I sit down at the computer I do this, eventually I'll move on to 5 minutes and so on. Drawing with a tablet for the first few times is like sitting down at an easel and realizing you've forgotten how to paint. It's tough shit, but pencil and paper aren't going to take me to the places I want to go with my art.

So yeah. 1 minute gestures. Go.

I just watched one of the best movies of my fucking life.
7 samurai is absolutely fantastic.

So I checked it out on Wikipedia, and apparently there was an anime based on it.

MY QUESTION

CAN SOMEONE TURN THIS MASTERPIECE

INTO THIS

Please, for one goddamned second, FUCK OFF with your giant robots and invincible unarmoured swordsmen. Do the people who made this realize how much they have downright insulted the source material? The 26 episodes that make up this gigantic 40 lb. box of rape each cost $300 000 US to make. THREE-HUNDRED-FUCKING-GRAND. EACH.
That is 7.8 MILLION DOLLARS

Give ME that money instead and I will make you something better ON MY OWN.

Now my cell phone is delicious.

But seriously, all the money seems to have been spent on cg scenes with giant robots and battleships. They could easily make a worthwhile tribute to this film if they just got rid of that shit and simply animated the movie. Sure, throw in a little steampunk, make it spicy. But don't make me sit here feeling like I would rather see that 7.8 mil going towards the funding of a genocide or a starlet's birthday present instead of forcing this bowel movement of an anime into existence.

Final statement, if you're going to make a show based on something incredible, be it a book or film or whatever, and you know that it's going to suck, don't advertise that you based it on said incredible thing. That will earn you as much love as you might earn from smearing shit on a priceless painting in a gallery. Instead, just say you came up with it yourselves and that you've never even seen the film. Trust me. Claiming ignorance will get you less hated by me than knowingly BADLY copying classics.

Cyberdyne Corporation of Japan, in conjunction with Daiwa House, has begun mass production of a cybernetic bodysuit that augments body movement and increases user strength by up to tenfold.
The HAL (Hybrid Assistive Limb) suit works by detecting faint bioelectrical signals using pads placed on specific areas of the body. The pads move the HAL suit accordingly. The Cyberdyne website explains: “When a person attempts to move, nerve signals are sent from the brain to the muscles via motoneuron, moving the musculoskeletal system as a consequence. At this moment, very weak biosignals can be detected on the surface of the skin. HAL catches these signals through a sensor attached on the skin of the wearer. Based on the signals obtained, the power unit is controlled to wearer’s daily activities.”
Among the potential applications, Cyberdyne is emphasizing helping people with movement disabilities, augmenting strength for difficult industrial tasks, disaster rescue, and entertainment.

The HAL suit is not currently available. But according to Nikkei News, Daiwa and Cyberdyne are planning an annual production of 400 units and they should be marketed at approximately $4,200 US dollars.

On Transhumanism

An excerpt from a sci-fi interview I am writing for a friend.
Set in about 2160. It's kinda crap, but it was about 10 minutes of work, very little editing, came out alright.

Transhumanism isn't new, everyone knows that. Since the late twentieth century there have been means to augment the human body with technology, to make it better in some way. Now, from what I know, back then these sort of implants, bionic eyes, legs, whatnot...were mostly for medical use, for people with disadvantages in the first place. Transhumanism began as a means to equalize the human race, so that none would be at a disadvantage. This is the way that all technology starts, looking at history. Guns were created to allow the less physically able to hunt as well as those hunters who had mastered the bow. Firearms technology quickly reached the point where it was better than bows and arrows in every concievable way. Now nobody uses the bow and arrow anymore for anything other than sport, and even that's dying. It's happening with flesh right now. Rather than using technology to keep up with the norm, people are now using it to surpass their flesh-and-blood peers. Currently, about 70 percent of the world's population has recieved some manner of technological augmentation not required to keep them alive. That's approximately Seven Billion People. Now, about 50 percent of that 70 only has a basic add-on, like a net3 connection and and AV implant. While these do nothing to your physical self, they put the recipient at an advantage to full-flesh. It has been proven that students using the AV implant can take in twice as much information twice as fast, and retain it better than a full-flesh. Pretty much the only reasons someone wouldn't want the basic package are fear, ignorance, or religous beliefs (kindof a combination of the first two, haha). Do you know the saying that a human being only uses ten percent of his or her brain? This is well-known, but the reason behind it is not. It's not because we are lazy, or don't know how to tap into that other 90 percent. It's a simple matter of nutrient and energy distribution. Our bodies are actually incapable of providing the necessary nutrients for all of the brain to function at the same time. You see, that 10% is not just some chunk in a pie chart, a solid block of our brain that is constantly functioning. It's a little bit of all of the parts of our brain, all over the brain. Imagine a snowy static television screen, if you will. Most of the screen is grey, except for little black specks. Imagine that the screen is a map of the brain. Think of the grey area as the unused portion, and the black specks are the parts of the brain that are in use. The specks are constantly changing positions, but there are always the same amount at any given time. Take all of those little specks and bunch them together, and they should take up about 10% of the screen. It is possible to have more neurons firing at once in the brain, allowing for greater intelligence, faster thought, greater memory and faster reflexes. Mankind as a whole has gone as far as it can in the bodies they are born with. Imagine a current-generation processor core, put in a computer from, say, the year 2000. Assuming compatibility, this computer would run, but the old hardware surrounding the processor would literally hold it back from reaching its potential ability. It is clear that the next stage in humanity's evolution will be a mechanical one. We must upgrade the hardware surrounding our brains in order to reach our race's full potential.
